A trip on the ss Shieldhall from Southampton, UK to the English Channel. I work on this ship as Chief Mate. The ship is the biggest cargo ship in Europe still powered by steam recirocating engines.
She is fitted with 2 triple expansion steam engines; smaller versions of those fitted in Titanic. Also, most of the auxiliaries on board are steam powered. The two boilers are of the 3 furnace Scotch design, also very similar to those fitted in the Titanic.
She now carries passengers around the south coast of England. Her original purpose was to take sludge from the city of Glasgow, Scotland and dump it off the Isle of Bute. In later years, she plied her trade in Southampton under the ownership of Southern Water, dumping treated sewage off the Nab Tower. It is worth noting that she has always carried passengers, even when working as a sludge carrier.
Shieldhall is about 2000GRT (Gross Register Tons) and was built by Lobnitz and Co., Renfrew, Scotland in 1955.
She is run entirely by volunteers and if anyone is interested, their website is www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk.

  • Sweet! What's that last machine you showed?

  • That was the steering gear at the stern of the ship. You can see the tiller and quadrant with degrees marked on it.

  • Outstanding

  • I've got a VHS video of SS Shieldhall where they say they use emulsified oil on the main engines (which you can see in this video). Is this deliberate, and why?

  • Phenomenal work!

  • Cool, I thought it might be something like that. Just figured i'd ask anyway. Thanks for the reply!
