When I got news about Newt getting paid millions by Freddy Mac I felt cheated... Then I stopped myself. Go to the details, I thought, the devil is in the details, not in blanket statements.
@warrenroche Newt's personal wage from the work his company did at Freddie was about $36,000 a year over eight years. That is about $288,000...meaning that Gingrich actually over estimated what he earned from Freddie during that time. Remember, all fees paid by the company hiring a consultant does NOT go directly into the hands of the consultant....or my husband would be a VERY wealthy man! :)
@cvsmech1 Freddie Mac's CEO is a Democrat. Newt testified before Congress that they should NOT give any money to Freddie. He recommended that Freddie be broken up into smaller companies and that government backing of a private company was NOT a good idea. There is nothing illegal or unethical about Gingriches actions...in fact, he should be commended for his attempts to force reform of Freddie Mac.
@warrenroche And if you keep reading you will find that all of the accusations against Newt during the time he was speaker were dropped except for one. And the one that was not dropped involved a book keeper who entered wrong information and was not traced to Gingrich directly. The fine was reimbursed when the IRS cleared him. Repubs did not like Gingrich much more than Dems did because he was challenging the status quo even then. BTW, Boehner led the GOP attacks on Gingrich.
@onegsoul Newt talks about running a business. It is a business based solely on his connections in govt. If he wasn't once speaker of the House he would have never seen a dime! And let's not forget:
January 22 1997: The House voted overwhelmingly yesterday to reprimand House Speaker Newt Gingrich and order him to pay an unprecedented $300,000 penalty, the first time in the House's 208-year history it has disciplined a speaker for ethical wrongdoing. The vote was 395 to 28. Not even close!
@onegsoul Freddie Mac's CEO said that newt built bridges between the freddie mac and the house republicans to get their plans approved. And here you're in 2011 in such a mess. Not only what he did was unethical it was very damaging as well. At the same time, if it wasn't Newt, it would've been someone else. But there's no way a person with such a character should be the president.
I don't believe Newt did anything unethical or immoral. He stated earlier this week that he plans to release all documents - for as many as can be released w/out violating a confidentiality agreement - to be released. I consider Newt to be the best of the candidates we have & he is the only one that has openly addressed his opposition to the UN plan: Agenda 21 which ties into much of what we see rolling out across America. It's a global Communist 'green' plan that urgently needs to be stopped.
At the CNBC debate Newt said Freddie Mac paid him $300,000. Now we know that was a lie. The real number was in excess of $1.6 million. That would make him the highest paid historian in history! If you think that money wasn't paid to gain political influence you are deluding yourself. It was paid for lobbying while calling it by another name.
@sortathesame are you really so naive or newt's paying you for doing what you're doing right now.

@onegsoul Do you really expect Gingrich to hold to his opposition to Agenda 21 after all the flip-flopping he's done on other issues?

Newt also supported a mandate making the purchase of health insurance compulsory, just like Romney and Obama!
