Here is the result of a Metal detecting Robot that I'm built that is fittingly named: "X-marks-the-Bot" or "Xbot" for short. It's made out of a broken original Xbox I bought from a pawn shop for $15 and a Radio Shack Metal detector I picked up at a garage sale for $5. The primary objective of the Xbot is to cruise around looking for metal then stop and blink when it finds some. I wanted it to be able to function outside so I used geared motors (high torque, low RPM) with some monster truck wheels on it. I placed some high wattage, low resistance Sand Stone Resistors on the Arduino Shield for some current sensing for the motors, that way if the front bump sensor didn't activate then the bot would still be able to sense that it's stuck. I entered this robot in the Arts & innovation category in the 2010 Western Canadian Robot Games and it tied for first place for Technical Merit (Best engineered).
