This is my latest Excel game, inspired by the Puzzle Quest PC game, which is the classic Bejewelled puzzle game that contains the usual RPG elements of battling and levelling up.

Labyrinth was an old board game I once had that was about shifting an entire wall (row or column) by one space across the 8x8 board, to open up new paths.

In this Excel game, an entire row, column or diagonal is shifted using one of the spare blocks. The shift needs to result in scoring a line of 3 matching colours. Much more points are given when several blocks are destroyed in one turn. When blocks are matched/destroyed, new blocks respawn in their place and gives a chance of chaining points when even more blocks are matched. (As this video demonstrates)

Yes, the story board is terrible! Einstein, (or Einy) gets mentally prepared for winning the finals of a Labyrinth tournament, featuring 2 tutorial levels and the quarter-final stage.

The game seems to be complete so now I can focus on making a proper story sequence for this.

One thing this demo doesn't show is a typical fight to the death. When particular coloured blocks are matched, the player is offered the chance to do a certain type of ability. For instance the red blocks offer the various physical attacks.

That's about all I'll say! Thanks for watching, and please leave comments if you have any suggestions, they are defintely welcome! :)

  • I don't know any good tutorials specifically for making games. You'll find plenty of general Excel and programming tutorials on Youtube or through Google. If you're already good with Excel that's a great start to making games.

The first Excel games I made had no programming, they just had the player type values in certain boxes to play the game. (Manually tossing a coin to decide which fighter is able to take the next turn and then adding one to their total turns taken for example.)

  • Do you have any links to any tutorials on how to make games in Excel?
