On 2/17/2011 I went to the Staples store located at 16817 Coit Rd,
Dallas, TX 75248 to purchase a Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 printer. The shelf-price was $199.99, and I had a printer to trade-in.
When I got to the counter I requested a pricematch and the assistant manager Alieu Touray asked me which store. I told him that Amazon had it for $156 but he cut me off before I could finish the price and said they don't pricematch Amazon.
No biggie, I replied, Wal-Mart has it for cheaper too, $169.99, and if he gives me a second I can pull up the ad on my phone.
Before I had a chance, he said "We don't pricematch Wal-mart", and left me standing at the register as he started walking towards the office. I told him that his pricematch policy did not have any sort of 'wal-mart' disclaimer, I'd be more than happy to show it to him, and he needed to get me his manager.
He returned from the office after approx 3-5 minutes and asked in a very rude and abrasive tone "Well do you have it?!?
"Have what, the wal-mart price or your own company policy, and where is your manager?" I replied
"I know our policy, and we don't price-match wal-mart. I am the manager, if you don't leave I call police."
This took me back a bit, I was shocked, I demanded to speak to his general manager, but he retreated into the back office again. After a few minutes, I turned to the cashier next to me (Ethan, very helpful guy, his manager could learn a few lessons) requested that he call the GM for me, as this was entirely unacceptable.
Ethan went to the back, returned almost immediately and said that the assistance manager was on the phone with him right now.
Assistance manager Alieu Touray emerged from the back yet again, putting his cellphone in his pocket as he approached me. I again requested to speak to his general manager, and he replied that he was the manager, he had given me the GM's card (with the store phone# on it), and that he just got off the phone with corporate, who confirmed that they don't pricematch wal-mart. He again stated if I didn't leave immediately he would have me arrested.
At this point I whipped out my phone and recorded this video, my favorite part is probably where he calls me a crook about 14 seconds in. His exact words.."Because...you crook!"

I met with the General Manager, Natanael Alvarado on the morning of 2/18/2011. He began by siding with his assistant manager, who called him last night after I left. He told his manager that I had threatened him with physical violence and was extremely aggressive while 'invading his personal space.' After seeing the video, he half-heartedly said that he'd talk to his assistant manager about it, because calling customer's crooks is never acceptable, but Mr. Touray had worked for him for 6 years, and he didn't believe that what I said was true.

So, here you go Staples, let's see that 'soul shine' now.
It's a shame that trying to buy something as simple as a printer from you is anything but 'EASY', as instead of your management team actually upholding your advertised pricing and policies, they find it much easier to simply lie to customers and threaten to have them arrested if they dare try to utilize your 'deals'.

  • You're an asshole man. Just go compare the prices yourself. And if you don't like Staples you don't need to give the people there a hard time, just leave.

  • I would have denied you as well if you tried this in my store. It's one or the other. Either the price match or the trade-in. And I'm not surprised the manager told you that he was considering calling the cops. There's no reason that he has to put up with you making a scene. If the cops actually came, you would have been in the wrong and if you continued your bullshit, the cops would not only have escorted you out, but taken you in and fined you. I've seen it a bunch of times. Grow up.

  • What "StaplesCustomer" forgot to remember while analyzing Staples' price-matching policy is that a store reserves the right to deny such a request. What you tried to do was price match the printer to Walmart's price, and then receive another $50 off for the recycle. Crafty thinking, but that's never going to happen, in any retail store that you try this at.

  • Even walmart won't price match their online store. Most retailers will only price match if it's physically at a store, not online.

  • Staples policy is to only price match brick and mortar retailers that are in stock. Some District managers have different policies, like mine is only local stores within 25 miles of our store can be price matched and we have to call and confirm. Staples doesnt HAVE to price match anything. Also, we price match based on net price. 199 printer - 50 for the trade in - 149 = LESS THAN WALMARTS price. You couldnt walk in to walmart and get it for that price so why price match?

  • I have had some service relating to my computer repair that is anything but "easy"!! They clearly have no intention to replace my computer that has been in the shop 4 times now for the same problem. I am receiving considerable run around when I contact various individuals at the toll free number as well. If you go to a store and ask the worker to explain the service plan they will give you uniquely different facts. The training in this area must be weak.
