In Norway we play mouth harp/jews harp melodic, as a solo instrument.
The pictures in this video are of Norwegian hand made mouth harps made by Jacob Lavoll, Bjørgulv Straume, Folke Nesland and Knut Tveit.

This is a Norwegian mouth harp song called "Fingernemen", played by mouth harp player Erik Røine, who is pictured at the end of the video.
Cd can be found here: http://www.musikkonline.no/shop/displayAlbum.asp?id=12400

English: http://cdon.eu/music/berg_hallgrim%2ferik_r%C3%B8ine/

This video was uploaded to spread the Norwegian mouth harp tradition!

  • do you sell any jews harps? im currently looking and havent found specifically what i want

  • @xGirsWafflex I don't sell any jews harps myself, but I know where you could order different models of jews harps online.

I just need to know a little more specific what you're looking for, like what pitch you want on your harp, do you have any experience on playing the jews harp and how much are you willing to pay?

You can find many different models of jews harps at sites like Ebay etc, but most of these (especially cheap harps) are not really fit for melodic play, due to their poor harmonics.

  • @AleXzorZ i kinda like the tone that this guys is playing and yes i have a jaw harp that i got at a viking festival i think it was hand made and it had kinda a low baritone sound i think its norweigean im not the best but i can play fairly good if i do say so myself... i want another one because the tounge of my other one snapped from me playing fast beats, id like a nice one ranging from like 50$ and under

  • @xGirsWafflex Oops, thought I already answered this comment :p

I would recommend you to take a look at Zoltan Szilagyis website (just google his name), he sells quite a wide range of harps, with different tunings etc :) The prices are nice too :)

  • There are many names for the instrument :p

most common ones are jews harp, jaws harp, mouth harp etc.

I myself prefer to use Mouth harp :p

  • hello, i notice all the other comments are not in english but i will commment nonetheless. first of all, this is fantastic. this is really really amazing. and secondly, do you know what note most mouth harps are tuned to? i cant find out anywhere...

  • Thank you for appreciating the norwegian mouth harp :)

The most common tuning, I suppose, is G.

The tuning of the harp depends on what style of playing you're doing, like if you're going to play a song in the style of the dance "gangar" or "halling", people usually use harps in the range from F to G#.

People who play "springar" usually like using harps from around G to high C, and sometimes even high D.

    Hope this sums it up!

  • @AleXzorZ For me it's jaw harp. Or munjiga (mouth gigue)

  • @AleXzorZ thank you :)

  • @AleXzorZ Munnharpa = Mouth Harp... pretty easy translation AND as Scandinavian countries are the more superior countries in the world, it is nice to have things their way for a change.

  • @LordPirani It is the case where it is kept in between playing... =)

  • Fantastisk spela! =))

  • What is this wooden piece on the left side at 0:22?
