PIT BULLS: OccuPIT Denver

Unlike Denver Pit Bull Ban petitions of the past... we are not ONLY sending the results to Denver city officials... but also every major news source in the U.S.

For those unfamiliar with the ban here in Denver:
- the ban is based on two incidents that occured 22 years ago
- the information the city of Denver acquired to support their ban came from the Center for Disease Control circa 1978 (the CDC has since come out publically denouncing the use of the old information as a basis for breed bans as it was HIGHLY innaccurate and incomplete.)
- the city of Denver's only expert testimony came from a journalist (Merrit Clifton) and not a Professional Vet, Behaviorist, Trainer, Rescue, Animal Control, etc (in fact, CAACO [Colorado Assoc of Animal Control Officers] have publically stated they do not support the use of BSL in securing public safety. Others to publically take this stance include HSUS, ASPCA, AHA, AKC, UKC, AVMA, RSPCA, Best Friends Animal Society, etc)
- The city of Denver has been/ is constantly under attack of class-action lawsuits regarding the ban
- Since the city has no credible expert testimony, has no corporate support from any of the major animal welfare organizations, the city can not (nor have they ever been able to) provide factual (untampered with) documentation as to the ban's effectiveness... the city's only basis for the ban is their "Home Rule" authority. Note- as of 2004, the state of Colorado made it unlawful for any city or municipality to impliment / enforce breed specific laws. Denver's Home Rule supercedes state law.
- Depending on "whom" they are debating the ban issue with, the city of Denver's reasoning for their ban changes on a regular basis.
- Denver's Pit Bull ban cost's the citizens of Denver approx $803,170 annually to enforce. This is particually interesting as the city of Denver currently faces a $120,000,000 budget crisis due to the economy failing in 2008.

On a personal note, I have discussed this issue with the Denver Mayor and most of the city council memebers. For anyone with intelligence, it is crystal clear that the ban on pit bulls is not based on dogs or public safety... rather, the political agenda and "ego" of the last remaining council members belonging to the "Good Ol' Boys Club". Many have argued: "Well, just wait until next election and have them voted out." My response: "Sure, and how many more family dogs will be confiscated and destroyed between now and then?"

It's long past time to restore the pitbull to his justly earned reputation and position as the best family dog ever...loving, loyal, affectionate, playful; great with children! Far too many innocent dogs have paid with their lives because of unfair, unsubstantiated BSL! Far too many families have suffered loss of a beloved family pet because of intransigent officials and boards who do not wish to deal with more pressing and important matters.
