Here's what happens: two DXB Diesels take 240 from Wellington to Palmerston North. The two electrics are then spliced in but aren't powered up. The train continues on to Tangiwai where the two diesels are disconnected and relocated further up the track to the Karioi siding. The electrics are then powered up and continue to take 240 on to Hamilton. An hour after the train departs Tangiwai, the two diesels then depart Karioi with a pulp train for Wellington.
This clip shows the diesels leaving 240 at Tangiwai and then the electrics departing Tangiwai with 240 in tow. A little bit of rail action for a quiet Sunday afternoon. This clip is from the DVD Ruapehu Rails 2.
very cool video :)
