@SlaptMan: By default Mint 12 isn't using Compiz since it's using Gnome-Shell. But, i'm sure compiz is still available to use if you want.
Now, in Gnome-Shell (which is still pretty new) you can install a plugin for zooming. I having tried it myself and I don't think it's in the default repose. But, if you Google/Youtube "Mouse Wheel Zoom - Linux GNOME" you should find a video by gotbletu that goes over it. I'm sure it will become a built in feature at some point.

@metalx1000 In mint 12 is it safe to assume compiz don't work properly?I am looking for a desktop zoom...is there anything else other than compiz I can use to zoom the desktop?

Debian Stable is the most stable distro I've ever used. Never had a problem with any of the programs, but you lose out on having the newer stuff.
In the End, what distro you use doesn't matter. They can all do the same things, it's just how much effort you put into it. The more effort you put in the more you'll learn and the better your system will be. But, more people don't want to put in the effort. That's why we have Ubuntu/Mint.
Just have to find what is best for you.

@SlaptMan: Also, Debian has 3 versions at all times. Unstable, Testing, and Stable. A default install of Debian will be Stable. So, it's won't have the newest packages yet. I believe Ubuntu is equivalent to Debian Testing.
You can always switch over to Testing, but you'll have less stability.
You can also go with unstable and get the newest stuff, but have lots of problems.

@SlaptMan: As far as Debian not having all the packages of Ubuntu, you are correct. Debian works hard to have only FOSS in their repose. So, things like Flash and Proprietary Drivers won't be in the default repose. Although there are non-free repose you can add if you want.

@SlaptMan: I really like Linux Mint and have been using that for a while. But in my hart I am a Debian guy.
Woulnt the echo also show up in the process list? Additionally since you are using bash you can use /dev/stdin as a filename.
