FANNY BAY - A new environmental group began forming in the Comox Valley this week, coming together to collect questions and research answers surrounding a proposed coal mine site.

The group is concerned about a proposal by Compliance Coal to open a 200 hectare surface and 3100 hectare underground site to be located just west of Fanny Bay. The Raven Coal Project would extract metallurgical coal mixed with iron ore for export to markets in Korea and Japan.

Members of the Comox Valley Water Watch Coalition held an information meeting on November 24th in Fanny Bay which drew more than 200 concerned audience members. The Coal Watch group is being formed by many who attended that meeting.

The Raven Coal Project is currently in the pre-application stage and the companys president says meetings will be held in the future where the public will be able to ask questions and voice their concerns. The company says it is committed to managing the proposal in an environmentally responsible way.
