This is a psychogalvanometer. It can't be really used as a lie detector because certain words cause anxiety states in people which is NORMAL. It does not mean they are lying.

I don't think the scilons let you see the meter when auditing you though. If you could watch the meter, then ought to be able to regulate your grip to manage the needle's movement.
