78RPM Victor disc from WWI. The Peerless Quartet performs a patriotic number to keep up spirits of soldiers and those at home.
This record had to be played with a soft tone needle, and with the microphone right in front of the phonograph, so you will hear the spring grumble a couple of times.

I often think of this old song as I remember it being played on an old tall Victrola that was in the basement of my Aunt Sue's house. This and "She's a Grand Old Rag" were soon changed to more acceptable language, but I only recall the originals. This recording by the Peerless Quartet is the original version. A joy to hear after nearly 60 years.

I listened to this as a little boy, on a record my father played for me, which he inherited from his own father (who had been an infantryman in "the Great War"). We actually had two different versions of the song -- in the other recording, it promises to "Crown Bill the Kaiser with a bottle of Budweiser" -- I wonder if Anheuser-Busch appreciated the product placement.
