Sammy wrote this song for Van Halen, but it didn't fit into their plans so he ended up giving it to Meat Loaf. Well, Meat Loaf proceeded to butcher the song (no thanks to Sammy, who co-produced it), taking away all of the heart and soul and turning it into a bombastic, overblown second-rate Jim Steinman ripoff. Obviously Sammy was not entirely happy with the end result, because he decided to remake the song a couple years later. But what does Sammy do?? He replaces the original acoustic guitar with some annoying ELECTRIC guitar, once again removing the song's heart and soul.

So, now you get to hear this song as it was meant to be heard. One of Sammy's best, IMO.

LYRICS:

Love's an hourglass
It goes out wide, then comes in closer
Time ticks away, drips away
Leaving empty sanded shoulders to cry on

Who said that love can last forever?
I'm growing tired
Of feeling like I do

As we drift apart
Little secrets come between us
As we sail away
Feeling comfort in the distance

And you said that love would last forever
And I'm growing tired
Of feeling like I do

Oh, there's a time and there's a place
A change of heart; about face
It's about love, it's about forgiveness
It's about our destiny, oh

Tell me now, tell me like it is
'Cause you don't have to give
'Cause amnesty is granted

Now what's done is done, for everyone
So come on baby, we can start again
Right now, amnesty is granted
Amnesty is granted

Oh, I think a lot
Yeah I think a lot
I've been thinking about you baby
Lord knows I've been thinking about you

I've been thinking love should last forever
But I'm growing tired
Of feeling like I do

Oh yeah, and there's a time and there's a place
A change of heart; about face
It's about love, it's about forgiveness
It's about our destiny, oh

So tell me now, tell me like it is
No one has to give
'Cause amnesty is granted
Now what's done is done
For everone
So come on baby, I want to start again
Oh yeah, amnesty is granted
Baby come on, 'cause amnesty is granted
Oh baby come on, amnesty is granted

Recorded live in 1993.

  • I wouldn't say Sammy butchered this song. On Marching To Mars, it fit the way he did it. This is a good version though. I would love to watch him do this live.

  • Read Sammy's book and you'll understand what this song is all about.. What you see is what you get with Sammy. He has to be the most honest motherfucker.

  • I've got to say, I love Meat Loaf, but Sammy's version (which ever one) blows Meat Loaf away.

  • I like this alot. I had never heard this acoustic version of it till now.

  • I love the song both with electric guitar or acoustic. never even listened to Mat Loaf's version cause I never wanted to spoil how I know this song as Sammy sings it.

  • I love both. This is so sweet hearing it like this though.

  • Meatloaf is a fat fuck, Sammys left nut has more talent than than dude....Listen to the cd version its better, this is rare....

  • The acoustic version isn't as good but Sammy still is the KING!!!

  • Great tune. Love the Red Rocker and not only does he rock, but this is a great example of a 'sensative' or 'meaningful' tune he can write. Sammy's songs have gotten me through many tough times...

  • As stated below....everyone has their opinion.....everyone has different tastes....and that's fine. I respect your opinion and tastes but personally I think Meat Loaf's version is head and shoulders above this.

  • Truthfully, opinion is opinion when it comes to the style of music. No one version "owns" another. This is a great version of the song, just entirely different. To blame meatloaf for the production is retarded. He didn't produce and record his own stuff, he did what everyone else did: He had them produced and recorded professionally.

As for the "annoying electric guitar" - that, along with most of Meat's later stuff, was recorded by a fantastic guitarist: Eddie Martinez.
