Over the mountain, across the sea, watching a radio on TV. (Psssst! Move away, kids!)

Johnnie & Joe was an American R&B vocal duo from The Bronx.

Johnnie Louise Richardson (1935-1988) and Joe Rivers (1937) began singing together in 1957 and released several singles on Chess Records. Three of the songs hit the U.S. singles charts. "Over the Mountain, Across the Sea" went to #3 on the R&B chart and #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "I'll Be Spinning", went Top 10 R&B, both in 1957. "My Baby's Gone", a #15 R&B hit, was their last, although "Over the Mountain, Across the Sea" returned to the pop charts in 1960, peaking at #89 the second time around.

All of the Chess singles were leased from J&S Records, whom Johnnie & Joe were under contract to.

Johnnie Richardson died of complications from a stroke on October 25, 1988.

  • I felt in love with this song when i heard it for first time In "ritchie valens movie" It wasn't an accident It was our fate to Meet us this "song and my ears" ♥♥♥♥

  • Notice the kids slow dancing. The guys are holding the girls arms at

waist level instead at shoulder level. This was considered really cool

and different from how their parents would slow dance.

  • old farts unite!

  • Don't sing like that anymore

  • That was the producer or floor manager whistling "Hey get otta the way, kids". Gotcha. Great music and thanks for giving info about Jonnie. Played this for my Wife - then engaged to her 1965 - at the USAF Croughton, Northants base Service Club. Interesting. Nobody - NOBODY had ever heard of it before then. Today, classic. Now I'll look for "My Baby's Gone On, On". . .Thanks for taking time & trouble to post. CFN
