apart from the amazing stars then, just the overall atmosphere of sophisticated, civilized people having fun together in such a charming manner.. that loss is heartbreaking. There actually was such a thing as "society" and "socialites" then. It seems we have lost something in the intervening years. How sad.

The funny thing about Bob Hope is that he signed in as "Bing Crosby"

Bennett frothes at the bit when the guest is a writer.

@kate31184 He asked, "Do you write books?" Yes!
Then he asked, "Are you an author?" Well, duh...if he writes books then he's an author!

@romeman01 Ah, I see, thanks! And thanks for posting these! I'm kind of obsessed with them!
Can someone help me out? I don't understand why the whole Herman Wouk bit is funny. I don't want to pull the I'm too young card, but I think I might be too young.

@kate31184 I found the Wouk item amusing 1) for Fred Allen's comment that a professional man is a "man who is employed" (host John Daly was notorious for giving the panel unhelpful info about mystery guests and this was exactly the kind of answer Daly might have given); 2) for the way Bennett Cerf was led to ask if Wouk was a Random House writer (continued ....)

@kate31184 (msg concluded...) (Cerf was the head of RH and was always suspecting that the WML staff was trying bring on writers he should have known who would disguise themselves so well that he wouldn't recognize them, to the amusement of all); 3) for Daly's hilarity at Cerf's mistake (Cerf had long been pretending to insult Daly in little barbed exchanges during the show and Daly was always looking to get back at him). It is, in fact, more of an "insider" segment than the others are.

@Bobstew68 It may be my imagination, but John Daly's face at 7.09 looks red as a beet.
