@packingten I always thought Mellons and Keith sounded a lot alike too. Mellons reminds me a lot of John Anderson as well, and the resemblances are due to one primary reason....the were ALL big Lefty fans :)

This is such a special song for so many reasons. It was Keith's favorite song by his favorite artist and he even had one of the original writers come and write a new verse. Aparently the day he recorded it he actually went to Lefty's grave and let him hear the new verse.... It could be argued that this song was Keith's requiem.

I think the best version of Keith Whitley singing this song is on the Japanese tour with JD Crowe
and the New South.

I met Keith personally in 1988 the year before he died and this song still breaks my heart every time he sings it. His music is very special

@highnrising Mellons was a great country voice...he just fell victim of the cheesy Nashville establishment "control" factor. You'd be amazed at how little control a new artist has in that town. They're totally dictated to and Mellons could've a great Country Music treasure but late 80's Nashville powers let this one slip thru their fingers.

RIP Keith!
Thats Richie Bennet from Michigan on the bass. The ole Faltrock picker.

I'm sorry, but that's Mike Chamberlain on bass. Keith's band Miami is backing him here, including Randy Hayes on guitar, Bruce Rutherford on drums, Joey Schmidt on piano, & Carson Chamberlain on pedal steel.

Keith also had an eye for other talented singers, he discovered Ken Mellons in the 80's and told Ken he was one of the finest Country singers he'd ever heard. Alot of Whitley in Ken's voice.

I totally agree with you. I had the great pleasure of meeting Ken in 2005, and we had a very nice conversation, mainly about Keith. Ken is one of my all-time fave country singers, definitely one who graduated from the Keith Whitley School of Hardcore Honky-Tonk with honors!

So much for Whitley's eye for talent.
Isn't Mellons the guy who did that dopey Jukebox Junke song?

If "Jukebox Junkie" wasn't your cup of tea, you shouldn't judge him or anyone else by one song. Check out his entire body of work.
