Classical superstar Yo-Yo Ma established his Silk Road Project in 1998, to encourage deeper understanding of other cultures and beliefs -- because, in his own words, "when we enlarge our view of the world, we deepen our understanding of our own lives." Since that time, he and his colleagues have promoted the study of cultural, artistic and intellectual traditions drawn from the ancient trade routes -- the so-called "silk road" -- that stretched from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Today, the Silk Road Ensemble includes internationally renowned musicians, composers, arrangers, visual artists, and storytellers from more than 20 countries -- a one-of-a-kind collective that The Boston Globe has called "a kind of roving musical laboratory without walls." Each member's career illustrates a moving response to one of the primary artistic challenges of our time: how to nourish global connections while maintaining the integrity of arts rooted in authentic tradition. On June 4, 2011, NJPAC proudly hosts the Prudential Hall debut of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble.
