It is that environment of religious liberty that provided a backdrop for the Restoration of the gospel of Christ in the early 1800s. Even with American founded on religious liberty, there were misunderstandings, bigotry, and hatred that eventually cost the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith. But the work that he was instrumental in starting took root and has grown until today where the LDS church is the 4th largest church in the United States, with 13 million members worldwide and growing.

I am thankful for the great reformers during the age of the renaissance, such as Luther, Wycliffe, Wesley, Tyndale, Calvin, Huss, and others who bravely helped open up religious dialogue, study of the scriptures by all, and helped nurture a seed of desire in the hearts of good men and women for an expression of religious liberty, which is one of the underpinnings of western civilization.
