Vaulting on to an unbroken horse for the first time at Lucan Lodge - "Turbo"

Turbo has now been backed several times in a ground tie, but James has boosted on me on each time to control the mount better. But now he is confident in me mounting and being astride, and also comfortable with taking steps with a rider on his back. We have introduced the bridle as well, so today was his first unassisted backing, as well as the first time I asked for flexion with an indirect rein while mounted. I use an embankment to vault on - mainly because he is too tall for me to do it from the ground! As always, we work out in the open without restraints, but only because we have established his confidence and ground tying.

Yes, definitely unbroken @kerriemasseyx, certainly not drugged @hyperfocus2011. All the horses we break in are calm and confident - their attitude and acceptance to the training is the most important consideration in the early stages.

He's about 16hh - but I used a handy mound to help me get all the way up there!

@Mikeandwendy74 I DO know what that is, and I agree with you SOMETIMES. Sometimes it is nice to just ridde freely. But I think that you are showing that you REALLY care for your horse, and I respect that.

Some people just don't get it. A horse has nothing but skin between your ass and its spine. Why do you think a saddle is designed to distribute pressure OFF the spine. You need to learn horse anatomy, you just don't get it...at least use a pad for christ sakes and have a shred of respect for your horse.

Um, if you have NEVER gotten on him before then you should have started out more slowly, and getting him used to having your weight on his back and just start by leaning on him before getting to the point straight away. Just saying.
