@Mdubschamp IF indeed the Bible provides no example of a 'modern' sermon, (which I disagree with), then it would still be wrong to call this illustration a 'sermon'. It would be more genuine to say the Bible does not provide sermons, instead it only provides parables, illustrations, etc. Words have meanings; better to attempt to argue against sermons as a whole, rather that argue against the 'modern' idea of sermons. Re: the context, prove that Jesus specifically referenced those other issues
@staum607 Of course this was not a "sermon" in the modern sense of the word. There is no point in the Bible that provides such a "sermon". That's part of Rob's point. That teaching the gospel goes deeper than a traditional sermon found in modern mainstream Evangelical culture. Also, the overarching literary and Historical context more than allows space for parable to be concerned with more than "leadership" as these Jews would have been much less individualistic than u seem to assume.
Again an ounce of truth in order to allow the lie to be more easily swallowed. Yes, the fig tree was linked to the spiritual condition of Israel (leadership in particular), not because they were religious, but because their religion was bad. This though, has nothing to do with the "military or economic complex" though because the context of the passage does not allow for this. (This is also not a sermon, this is more like a parable)
Ahhh these are such good words being spoken. Especially the propaganda bit, so true, especially the church I grew up in. Rob is often criticized for being too vague and leaving things open ended and I think that is a great approach.

I definitely can relate as a minister to what Mr. Bell has to say.
