@StanPomeray In that case I apologise for misunderstanding your post and if I offended you in any way. It was Windsor Davies on the recording, and this is a very different recording from the single version (which can be found elsewhere on youtube.) The lead vocals and talking were most probably performed 'live' on the show because lip-syncing to talking is incrediblt difficult ans WDs performance is spot-on.
Apologies again. Grez

@GrezH When did I say that Don Estelle had no talent?? I said it was sad he ended up having to sing in shopping centres and being largely ignored by passers by, which he was, at least when I saw him in the Broadway Centre in Bexleyheath. And what I said was that Windsor Davies (if it really was him singing, which I doubt, personally) was superfluous in this recording principally because Estelle's voice was so good.
Actually.

@StanPomeray Just because he ended up busking in shopping centres doesn't mean to say he wasn't talented. He had a classy tenor singing voice and it's a shame that because of his looks he was never able to make the most of it.
As for Windsor Davies, he's taking the bass voice part from the Ink Spots arrangement of the song and isn't superfluous as you suggest. Yes it could have been done by someone else, but as a spin-off from a very popular sitcom this is a class act.

Quality song and very well sung by Don Estelle. I think he did have some vocal training and it shows. I have one of his LP's somewhere, the one with Paper Doll on. It's a pity that it wasn't possible to accept Don as a singer apart from the comedy, because he had such a fine voice. I'm afraid too many people judge the appearance rather than the substance. I wish I'd have seen him in the shopping centres, I'd have bought his CDs. Windsor Davies is a very good comedy actor, too.

Those were the days. What a fine voice the late Don Estelle had. Partnered by Windsor Davies, they made a distictive duo, with Davies providing the comic element and yet allowing Don's singing talent to shine. A song that is as fresh today as it was 36 years ago, thanks to the performances of these two stars.
