@SMOOVEMONK Easiest way is for them to be on the same network, get them to bring their laptops over and then they'll need your IP address, 192.168.0.something. If you want to allow remote access then you need fast broadband, a fixed IP address and a router that allows port-forwarding, etc. etc. Google for more info.

@emilyweight Oh dear... Do you have much experience with Terminal? It should be fine. Make sure you copy just the line... or type it by hand, if you copy a 'return' or some of the next line it won't work... make sure it is just
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
no space before or after
