El Vuelo is part of a series of commercially popular jazz/rock albums from the late 1970's by legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson which are blessed with some great drumming. This was one of the songs that made me want to play drums. The drummer is Peter Erskine, one of the most underrated players ever, and Maynard gives him a long leash on this song. These albums were out of print until late 2007, but now that they're available young drummers should be exploring this territory.
It is critical that every drummer develop their own unique style and interpretation. Therefore, I do not memorize any song exactly. I have spent 30 years playing drums and have developed my own style, which I prefer. I keep my playing within the framework of the song and will play a part exact if that part is either iconic (like Phil Collins In The Air Tonight) or critical to the success of the song.
Thank you for watching and lots of success drumming!!
