John Freeman outlines two of the steps in his ten-step program to end email addiction. "The number one thing...is not sending an email," he explains. "Another thing is just not checking it in the morning or at night."

-----

John Freeman talks about The Tyranny of E-mail: The Four Thousand Year Journey to Your Inbox.

The former president of the National Book Critics Circle and current American Editor of Granta, gives us a history of people's need for correspondence. He examines the astonishing growth of e-mail -- how it is changing lives, and not always for the better. - Book Passage

John Freeman is Acting Editor of Granta Magazine. As American editor of Granta, he has gone around the country visiting M.F.A. programs and English departments telling aspiring writers about his magazine, giving out discounted subscriptions and encouraging everyone to submit their work.

  • He got an Email from his brother that said "Aliens and Mosnters were attacking his place!"

  • I'm not addicted to email. In fact i have such bad relations to people that i very rarely check, at the fear of encountering hate-mail or simply "bad news".

I have a similar problem. Being a neurotic perfectionist I am too afraid of making myself look bad to other people, so its incredibly difficult for me to reply to emails.

  • Wasting paper, ink, and fuel that the Postal service burns to deliver a letter, plus waiting up to a week for a reply which wastes more paper, ink, and fuel, is MUCH better than sending an e-mail.

  • 1. Email can be just like a paper letter, if you change your expectations. So who says you have to treat email like IM?

    2. Find a job you love, then you won't dread it and emails related to it.

Use the technology... don't be a slave to it.

  • i hate using social networking sites. rather use my fone text and call.
