Day Four: Campeche -- Pirate town...YAR!

So when you think of Mexico, a few things probably come to mind; mariachis, tequila and...sombreros right? Ever wondered how they are made? Well, along the way to Campeche, the tour stops in the tiny village of Becal --"the sombrero capital of Mexico!" Here you'll get the chance to walk through the entire process from the picking of the Jippijoppi plant through to the pressing of the finished product: beautiful hand woven sombreros of all shapes colours and sizes. Seriously, you just can't go home from Mexico without one!

As soon as we arrived in Campeche...I was in love! A picturesque, pastel paradise on the Gulf coast. Holy, I've never seen a more beautiful town, the colours of the buildings that line the core are so vibrant, almost Disney-like. I've never seen anything like It, the baroque colonial buildings are in immaculate condition.

Campeche has such a fascinating history dating back to the 1500's. With tales of battles between Mayans, Conquistadors and Pirates, Campeche seems like a place right out of a movie. Being as the city is right on the Gulf, not to mention absolutely gorgeous, you can easily see how a colonial port city such as Campeche was so viciously fought over back in the day. The city though now expansive, was at the time completely surrounded by massive walls to keep pirates and buccaneers out and the walls are still standing today engulfing the oldest parts of town. The walls are a great part of touring Campeche and not to worry if you don't have it in you to walk all the way 'round, Campeche comes complete with a slow moving train, stopping at each bastion along the hexagon shaped fortress should the enjoy a tour of each of the various museums that are now housed within. Two MUST sees along the walls: Un-be-lievable sunsets from Fort San Miguel and five nights a week, at the "Land door" there is one of the most unique tourist attractions I have ever seen; a re-inactment of the historic battles that took place between the Mayans, conquistadors and pirates high atop the walls where these actual battles originally took place complete with light, sound and amazing costumes! A definite highlight!
