I'd like to know who's playing the Piccolo on this. I have always wondered if it was Carmen, and if so, why did he not play it more often. The only musician in the band that I know played Piccolo was Joe Cipriano and he did not join the band until 1962. You can hear it on the recording of "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever."

Could it be be Victor Lombardo? I have a photo of him playing the flute.

Carmen told my friend Ron that he was the one playing the Piccolo on the 1956 Capitol recording of "The Phonograph Song" and that it was the only time he ever played it. Of course, he could have totally forgotten all about this college medley from so many years before.

The "College Medley" was really a novelty recording. They sounded more like a marching band, and not a dance band. I'm sure if Carmen was playing piccolo it could have easily been forgotten.

I, too love the old programs. Check out the Big Ten Medley from the Illinois Varsity Men's Glee Club 125th Anniversary on YT at (Can't post even a YT link) /watch?v=w4T_wGE_-eE

The Glee Club was great. It's nice that many of the old tunes are still being sung.

It would also be interesting to know who plays the piccolo on "Step To The Rear", recorded by the Lombardo Band on their next-to-last studio album (circa 1968). My guess is Joe Cipriano. And speaking of Meredith Wilson, he also wrote the great "Iowa Stubborn", which was recorded by the Lombardo Band in the 50's. This is definitely one of my fav Lombardo recordings.

No, he didn't play Piccolo. But flute, yes. On Goofus there are at least three flutes and Ma, I Miss Your Apple Pie has three also. I Could Use a Dream has two flutes (Carmen and Fred Higman), 1 clarinet (Larry Owen), and bass clarinet (Victor). I think I have the same picture you have because I have never seen him with a flute anywhere else.
