What a beautiful introduction to Bartok. Amazing.

Yeah. It's a crazy world (but Antarctica isn't as crazy, I think. How could it be: it doesn't have many people!)
Oh, and something weird happened when I made my post to you. YouTube decided to post it, like, eight zillion times.(Well, four times...but that's three too many).
One thing is for sure; the middle voices of quartets don't always get their say. And here there is a pretty good ballence.
And we can both agree that...BARTOK ROCKS!

All I'm saying is, I rarely am missing the viola. I may be a bit out of my mind as well. How can we not be, living in this world.
sorry you never got a chance to rock Antarctica.

First, yes...I am a little out of my mind.
And, although you are right about the second violin often getting lost you are very wrong about the viola. In many quartets (the ensembles, not the compositions) the viola is lost. I know. I played the viola professionally for about 25 years on every continent but Antarctica (not a lot of venues there). Oh, and yes, I have seen the score of the work many times.
This is a performance of a very good amateur group. Well executed.

No the viola is not "lost" in a lot of quartets - it has a very distinguishable sound. If anything gets "lost" at all it is the 2nd violin. The "effects are a little big"? What? Have you seen the score? They play the "big" glissando because that is what Bartok wrote. You say "portamento ETC. Well, what other effects were too "big"? "Might just be the audio"? Good tempo? You think the Quatuor Fratres are going to be shaky in their tempos? Are you out of your mind?
Now this is music written 70 or 80 years ago. This is true artistic rebellion. Any rock music band of today (with their conventional chords and rhythms) can go jump in a lake comparing with this freshness. They are all imitating each other. Bartok was a true hard rock composer! Forget all the rest!
