Our horse trainer of 7 years never wore a helmet. One day about 5 years ago, she came over and put a helmet on. I asked why the change and she explained that she was taking psychology classes and was learning how very fragile the human brain is and how it can be ruined forever by even the most minor fall or bump. That sweet mare isn't gonna hurt your boy, but if he looses his balance and falls the hard ground might. You are obviously a loving dad. Helmets are replacable but brains are not.

love the mare! i too am a big worry wort about kids. the mare seems to understand she is carrying a child. but i would still be happier if he had a helmet on, even a bicycle helmet, just for the sake of having a helmet should the worst happen. i must say. he's more likely to slip than her to bolt/buck. seriously heart attack people, chill. if this were a psycho gamer i would get it. but this 3 year old is acting like a seasoned school horse. obviously the man can judge wether his son is safe.

They are so cute together (:

I love how horses react on children.
My mare can be put in the stable by children. She will walk slower when a child is leading her. When I'm taking her, she walk like there isn't gonna be any food left ;-)

Great video, that horse is so calm and gentle and obviously "well broke", it isn't all about age in a horse. The little boy is loving it, far better to be out loving what he is doing in the fresh air than as most modern children his age, stuck in front of the TV. He is a great little rider. That mare is taking care of her little charge. We had a horse like that when I was growing up, really gentle with the smallest children but an exciting ride for an experienced rider. Horses know.

Get that poor boy a OLD PONY that knows what its doing. Your son is pulling back on the reins a little bit while kicking and asking the THREE YEAR OLD HORSE to go.
Your kid is going to be a rider, not a passenger (like others...*ahem*). That is one nice horse!
Geez, maybe Child Protective Services should come out and take look at a kid actually having FUN...can you believe that someone on the other vid actually suggested that?? Wuss. *snork*

I've heard a lot of stories about CPS and my guess is that it's chocked full of alarmist ninnies like the one you are referring to.

I think your little man did a great job.He really rides soft for such a young boy.I have a three year old that rides too.A lot of those Fugly followers would die if they ever saw the rodeo clubs where we ride and all the young kids ride a lot hotter horses at dead runs in and out of the arena! You did a great job teaching your boy to ride, keep up the good work.I did put a helmet on my little guy, but he asks to wear one, and it makes me feel a little better, but I am a big worry wart.Nice mare!

After years of being in the horse business I have learned to decipher replys made by people who know and understand horses versus those who see horses as dangerous, unpredictable, almost mythical creatures. Thank you for responding from the perspective of the former.
