In February of 2000, I lost my dad to heart disease.

Every 7 minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke.

Cardiovascular disease accounts for the death of more Canadians than any other disease. It also costs the Canadian economy more than $18 billion every year in physician services, hospital costs, lost wages and decreased productivity.

Thankfully, theres Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, which leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living and advocacy.

In 2007, the Foundation spent more than $58 million in research, funding more than 900 researchers and research teams across the country. Since 1956, this has totaled more than $1 billion in research support.

Now, 9 years later, I work for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, putting my talents where my passions lie in order to hopefully save others from losing their loved ones too soon.

I also volunteer as a "Heart Month" captain, a door-to-door canvasser, and I fundraise online.
