I've messed around with Moogs at the music store and I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what the fuss is all about. Seems like more of a brand name/elitist kind of thing more than anything else.

moogs are monophonic. and moog-fanatics often defend them as the 'original'. there are so many new synths that will blow this old original piece of crap moog away. wonder why moog couldn't catchup with the times and become polyphonic. sequential circuits and roland have been making poly analogs since the late 70's / early 80's. ok roland is japanese, sequential and alesis are american - at least moog should have taken influence from them.
3500 bucks for one damn note of monophony? no thanks!

hey guys..me too ....confused. I want something light to transport around from house to house in 5 hours. I am thinking of getting a Roland AX-Synth keytar or a small synth like the Roland Sh-201... I prefer the 49 keys so it can double up as a KB. I am not a professional... I just play accompaniment and sing with the religious prayer group... You suggestion is welcom....tnx ed

@lavakava Moog stayed monophonic ? You clearly don't know what the hell you're talking about. I've just right behind me a Polymoog an 88 keys keyboard. And this synth is the only one in the whole world to be actually 88keys polyphonic. Not 4, not 8, not 12… 88. And it came out in the middle of the 70's. And that's just one of them.

@lavakava IMHO side by side comparisons of my moog little phatty with several VA synths didnt yield a "better" synth. They all sound and feel completely different.
-
@MisAnnThorpe It doesnt make much sense, but basicly the people giving this synth a hard time is upset that the "SH" isnt attached to an old 80's analogue synth. They care more about it being analogue than what can actually be done with the synth.
And that's why alot of professionals have this synth, because they care more about results than the exact nature of the gear, it is cheap, lightweight, userfriendly and sounds great.
Knobs feel cheap though, but holds up well in use all the same.

Excellent, I like it

I'm really confused by this synth. I've come very close to buying it but opinions on it are just so divided. I've heard that the build quality is very poor and must say that it looks very cheap to my eyes. However, the one thing above all else that makes me think there must be something special about this synth is that Richard Barbieri has one. Why would a keyboardist with a classic synthesizer collection, Prophet 5's, Oberheim, (you get the picture) have one of these if they're so worthless?
-
could you achieve this with a jp8080?

gear lust is a disease

Sounds really cool almost like a cross between Philip Glass and a national geographic special.

I like what you did here, Mars53, in fact, very much. It seems like something that I would do.

I use the MS-20 with my old Casio WK1800 Midi keyboard that is above the MS-20 and out of the picture.
why would i combine the 2 ?

I have a SH-201 too, and i love it. The lay out and programming concept are top notch, especially for a newb player like myself. The routing/filter options make connecting a groovebox or other for jamming/live purposes a snap! And the sound engine is just flawless, the quality and depth of sounds produced is nigh unrivalled at this cost! But tbh the standard patches arent all that awesome, and the features in terms of recording performances etc feels kinda limited.
Very nice vid too ;-)
