You will enjoy this video ONLY if you are really into the mechanics of large WWII era piston aircraft engines. You need high quality sound for this. Nothing like a 2100 horsepower aircraft engine starting up.

What'd be the point, though? It would have made it much heavier. The whole point of the Mustang was that it was small and light and fast. Besides, it seemed to do well enough with the Merlin.

  • my car starts just like that

  • ...and free car washes for the guys parked behind you? ;-)

  • That was incredibly cool! The sound was great too. I enjoyed listening to the piston heads clanking around in the cylinders. Thanks for sharing.

  • awesome and scare......

  • The Chance Vought Corsair has been on my top 5 list of favourite aircraft since I was a kid !! Is it true it had the largest prop ever fitted to a WW2 aircraft ?

  • This is the sex!

  • I bought a Corsair f4u model as a boy in the sixties . My father , a former RAAF WAG said I had good taste in aircraft , And I agreed . he laughed his head of , and I did too . One of those KID moments of unintended hilarity .

  • @stumer56 until the f86 came along

  • Originally for carrier operations, the US Marine Pilots had problems with deck landings due to the large engine. Then the Fleet Air Arm got them and developed a unique way to land them on a carrier by flying a slow turn and watching the deck through the side window. Once the US lads had sorted that out, the rest is history as they say. Arguably the finest carrier aircraft of the Second World War, although I think the Japanese would give you an arguement with the Zero!

  • My Dad came back from Germany after WWII and he said they dumped these and some tanks overboard to save fuel on the ride back.
