This is a mini production by AFN Kwajalein worker Kane Farabaugh about the northern island of Roi Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll of the Marshall Islands. Once a Japanese base during World War 2, it is now operated by the United States Army Kwajalein Missile Range, and supports the National Missile Defense Shield.

My brother took part in the 4th Marine Division landing on Roi-Namur. After this the 4th went on to the Marianas and Iwo Jima.
Needless to say there was heavy loses.

It was initially two islets. Roi and Namur. They were connected when the Japaneese fortified the two islands and built a small air strip out of coral. I know that doesn't help with the origin of Namur but... The highest elevation is 12'. I think it's a green on the golf course.

ROI NAMUR is an ancient word. our ancestors ( RIETORO) named these land depending of its appearance or usually of legendary stories.

I think the names of the islands in the atoll originally were anglicized versions of the native Marshallese pronunciation.

Thanks for the memories. Visited there 37 years ago while working on Kwajalein and saw most of what you showed. Everything still looks the same. GA

Hi ! What is the origin of the name "Roi Namur" ? I'm living in the City of Namur (country : Belgium), and "Namur" is no common name anywhere. Any explanation ?
Best regards, LA
