The original Magic Flute was created for a small theater in Vienna, and thus is a Singspiel, or musical play. In keeping with this, the Comic Opera Guilds Thomas Petiet crafted a translation that is both less grandiose than many operatic versions and sings well. This 1992 video was shot in a small theater for an audience of adults and children. The same show toured to adult audiences later in its run. Children were employed as the dragon in this opening scene as Tamino (Mitch Gillett) is saved by the three ladies (Amy Thomas, Barbara Pierce, and Patricia Petiet). I wish I'd seen this as a kid!
