Title: Down from Moonshine, a reading from the novel by the author, Mary Ann Cain.
Publisher: 13th Moon Press
Date of Pub: February 2009
Summary:
Down from Moonshine tells the story of the Stables, a former speakeasy, and now, in the present time of 1978, landmark restaurant near Chicago that is haunted by thoroughbred ghost horses. The novels magical/mystical elements are reminiscent of Toni Morrisons Song of Solomon. Baby Divine (known to others as Viney), the Stables housekeeper, has labored since speakeasy days to conjure her beloved racehorses back to life after a tragic stable fire. The Stables (and in turn, Chicago) embodies an unwritten social history that continues to shape the lives of those whose labors have sustained it.
Other information: This reading took place at the Three Rivers Institute of Afrikan Arts and Culture in Fort Wayne, Indiana on April 25, 2009.
