Après avoir composé son second concerto pour un pianiste russe Anton Rubinstein, un de ses amis, Saint-Saëns persévéra et composa un troisième concerto encouragé par l'opinion de son contemporain.
En 1869, il prit, sans préavis, un train à destination de Leipzig, emportant dans sa valise la partition du troisième concerto pour piano. Donné au Gewandhaus de Leipzig le 25 novembre, l'opus 29 ne connut cependant pas de franc succès.

  • This is a beautiful recording of this sublime movement. The first two movements were not appreciated at the premier in 1869; only the third found favor. Today it may be the opposite as the third movement is rather awkward, though well developed. This is the one concerto where I wish Saint-Saens (among my favorite composers) had re-written the last movement, to be more in line with the first 2.Thank you for this posting of a neglected and fascinating work. The pianist is J-P Collard.
