Mrs. Chan told two lies here, as was expected. 1) She would visit him in Vietnam; 2) she didn't remember if she called him or not. After all these years, they still couldn't lay everything out and be honest about it. That's the tragedy, and the story of my life (kind of).

In the last sequence, without dialogue (ie what is the same in the "definitive version), it is very difficult for a director to sustain such intense emotion for so long. I felt it through the whole sequence the first time I saw the film. Now, on successive viewings, I just appreciate the beauty of the music and architecture as separate elements, divorced from chow mo wan's story life...WKW is so brilliant at this distallation of beauty and experience

I didn't know about this film until my friends in America told me about it. Now it's one of my faves.

i think it was great he got to see her just one more time,and that last look he gave her, it gave me the chills. this movie is something else...
