Well, I haven't had my first cup of joe
So don't mess with me this morning
It's been a long time since seventeen, you know
I can't stay up all night
My heart was broken by a girl long ago
Though I had plenty of warning
That was the last time that happened, don't you know
Until last night
After so many chances, you'd think I'd get one right.

Well, I haven't had my first cup of black
So pass the cream and the sugar
Or let me grit my teeth and toss it back
'Cause it's bitter as hell
I thought that I was finally on the right track
Thought this one might last forever
One careless word, I saw the bubble start to crack
Slowly the pieces fell
Maybe I'm still seventeen, or am I doing that well?

Give me a sign that I can follow
Give me a word that I can use
Give me a pill that I can swallow
Give me a choice and let me choose
Give me a way that she can trust me
Give me a lead and let me run
Just don't tell me how hard it must be
It's nothing new under the sun

Well, I haven't had my first cup of brew
So just stay out of my way now
I've got a long road and many girls to do
Until they see the light
I don't suppose I'll learn my lesson real soon
Just gotta keep on my way now
And I'll keep going 'til the sky spits out the moon
