My name is Jamilla Farrakhan. I just graduated from the University of
Memphis with honors. Having the name Farrakhan is kind of a lot of
pressure 'cause you know a lot of people perceive my Grandfather a
certain way and when they meet me they already have this preconceived
idea of what, or who I am. You know there's a lot of people who are
intimidated, who don't want to approach me. But when I sit down and
talk to them they are like, "You guys are regular people." I became
more comfortable with the name in college; being on my own I was able
to understand more about others and myself and loved it. College
allowed me to make my own decisions and show my parents that all of
their work paid off. I feel an independence and power within myself.
