"Wait - what do you mean... us FOUR?" I gasped.
"I suggested to Nick that we double date tonight. Guess he didn't know my date would be you." He put his arm around my waist and sniffed my neck.
"Well, I thought I knew pretty well how Selena felt about you. Guess I was wrong." Nick glared at me.
"Well, it's not like you cared anyway. So what should me dating Joe matter to you?"
"Is that why you rejected me? To be with Joe?"
"Not exactly. But now that you accuse me of it, I see that I might have made the right choice."
"But that choice wasn't me."
"EXACTLY."
We stared each other down, Joe standing patiently at my side, until someone came down the stairs.
"Oh hey Selena." Heather smiled at me.
"Hi Heather." I said, still staring at Nick.
"Let's go in the kitchen," Joe said, easing the tension.
He took my hand and led us into the dining room. I sat next to Heather, and Joe and Nick sat across from us.
The food was all set up, and we began eating.
"Nick and Joe have been cooking for the past 3 hours," Heather chuckled.
"Really?" I smiled across the table at Joe. "Well its delicious."
Joe smiled back at me.
"So, Joe," Heather swallowed her food. "You're an English teacher. Why did you choose to be with a high school girl?" She smiled at me.
"I dunno. Selena's just special. And to you, she may just be a 'high school girl'. But our family has known Selena's for a long time. And, you and Nick are the only one's at school know about us, so..."
"Oh don't worry, your secret's safe with me. I was just wondering." She laughed.
"So you went after her even though you knew how much she hated you?" Nick said.
"Well yeah. I was a jerk to her. But c'mon Nicky Boy, haven't you ever been mean to a girl you like?" Joe laughed.
"No actually. I've been good to every girl I like." Nick stared at me. "But that's interesting, I wish I'd thought to use that method. Apparently it works wonders."
Heather just laughed. "I happen to think you were just fine, Nick."
We went the whole night just like that, Nick and I unknowingly attacking each other in our converstaion. Dinner was over before I knew it. I wondered how Joe and Heather didn't notice me and Nick's hatred towards each other. Or maybe they were just pretending not to notice; either way, it was better like that.
"You guys wanna sleep over?" Joe asked suddenly when me and Heather were at the front door.
"Oh, I-" I was about to deny the invitation when Heather interrupted me.
"Oh my gosh, that'd be great!" Heather squealed and grabbed my arm.
I sighed. "Sure," I said and put on a fake smile. "Come over to my house, I have some clothes for you that you can wear."
And with that, we trudged over to my house.
An empty house with me and the girl Nick ditched me for? Better hold on tight...
