Old/no technology, when the engineer switch the notch handle up, inside the engine there is a dwarf with a bucket who pours diesel inside the cylinders. :-))

Yes... '712 has been very unwell recently... a large and impressively damaged part of 712's engine is on my kitchen table... she's much better now...

Its turbocharger was knackered if I remember rightly. Either that or the intercooler was knackered.

@tutankahmun I may not know trains but i have a good idea with diesel engines and that looks like a shot turbocharger to me!

@Cafferssss I thought it might be the turbo. I saw a loco of the same type which had a problem with the intercooler and it produced similar effects - albeit not quite as bad.
