Frieda Hempel sings the first aria of the Queen of the Night (without the part 'O zittre nicht') from Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte".
It is rather an interesting rendition, because it is sung in Italian.

  • It doesn't work in Italian does it! Fantastic post though - thanks so much.

  • Yes, I don't like the Italian version, either. But it is one of my rare recordings of Miss Hempel...

  • Leidenschaftlich gesungen, toll!

  • All the great sopranos of that age sounded much the same, a clear voice like glass, almost like a counter tenor,or the castratos, artificially.

Does anyone know which philosophy went into the teaching of singing in that time?

  • Quite so. I always feel that Hempel was best as an agile but lyric singer. The beauty of her timbre is striking, second only to Kurz.

  • This is beautifully sung and better than Hempel's singing of the second aria. It amply reveals Hempel's warm tone, pure legato, and coloratura skill. Kurz made a very good recording of the aria as well.

  • She's good!

  • - and thanks again for the post. Very interesting.
