www.cigna.com | CIGNA Initiatives -- In the Know Series | Anchor Mike Morris gets tips from Stephanie Templeton, a registered dietitian at CIGNA, on ways you can eat healthy on a budget.
Most people have heard that healthy eating is important - but what exactly does eating healthy mean? Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of fat, salt, and sugar.
Stephanie suggests starting out by replacing meats with beans, lentils, soy, or even nuts, which can be cheaper and are just as nutritious. A change to healthier eating also includes learning about balance, variety, and moderation.
Planning ahead is important. Set aside time for planning meals and make a grocery list, including healthy snack ideas and main menu items. For those bargain hunters, remember when you're shopping that stores usually put the brand names at eye level, so look up and down for the best bargains.
