A finite-element CFD simulation of Marine Current Turbine Ltd's Seaflow marine turbine (the small white cylinder just off-centre), in a tidal channel 1km long and 80m deep.
The flow accelerates to 4m/s and runs for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
In this horizontal slice through the data, large-scale turbulence can clearly be seen. The flow speed peaks at just over 3.5 m/s rather than 4 m/s, due to the strong vertical velocity gradient induced by the bottom drag.
