La Biblioteca in mostra: animali fantastici

A partire dal 1° aprile 2007 con l'apertura di un'esposizione permanente, la biblioteca si "mette in mostra" nella sua completezza e riapre al pubblico il complesso monumentale comprendente il vestibolo, la scala e la biblioteca progettate da Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). Animali fantastici, in particolare, costituisce una carrellata di 19 manoscritti e di 9 libri a stampa databili tra i secoli XII ex. e XVIII, in latino, greco, volgare e persiano, originari dall'Italia, Francia, Olanda e Iran e provenienti da diversi fondi della Biblioteca, il cui motivo di interesse è rappresentato, almeno in questa sede, dalla presenza nelle pagine di raffigurazioni delle più svariate creature immaginarie: sirene, satiri, draghi, centauri, fenici, unicorni, basilischi, cavalli alati, grifoni e minotauri di ogni foggia e fattura, infatti, illustrano, spiegano e abbelliscono i testi, le iniziali, i margini, gli ex libris e le marche tipografiche di tutti i volumi in mostra.

Imaginary creatures is the first of a series of expositions that the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana will organize beginning from Spring 2007. The aim is to make the general public aware of the richness, variety and the interest of the Library's book collections, both manuscript and printed. By choosing to illustrate a different theme each time, the Library will 'show off' its treasures and reveal the details of many of its most curious and splendid heirlooms.
Imaginary creatures, in particular, is a display of 19 manuscripts and 9 printed books dating from the 12th to the 18th century in Latin, Greek, Vernacular and Persian, originating from Italy, France, Holland and Iran which belong to different holdings of the Library, the pages of which are animated by the presence of the most varied array of imaginary creatures.
