For centuries the sweet chestnut was the most important staple food in Ticino. Even today the spiny fruit takes center stage at many festivals.
One of the most popular chestnut festivals is here in Ascona, Switzerland in the Ticino region. Italian is spoken here. And it also has a lifestyle to match, under the southern sun.
"Castagnatas" (chestnut festivals) are celebrated throughout Ticino in October. Here you will find the golden brown chestnut in a variety of preparations: roasted chestnuts, marmalade, honey, fancy cakes, and ice cream, among other delicacies.

Take a stroll, accompanied by music, past the market booths and you will discover many other local culinary delights as well as arts and crafts. Serenading the passersby with their beautiful folk songs was this father and daughter duo, Nani & Lorenza.
