Greek-producer and regular Urban Torque artist Steve Mill delivers ʻHigh State Impressionsʼ, his debut LP, for the UK imprint this autumn.
Having produced and remixed for labels such as Plastic City, Global Underground, Vapour and Balance Mill has won supporters like Ben Watt, John Digweed, Hernan
Cattaneo and The Timewriter for his deep, varied and heavily melodic sounds. ʻHigher State Impressionsʼ is the result of one year of dedicated work by the midtwenties
Mill who is still based in Thessaloniki -- the place he grew up being inspired by international heroes like David Morales, Daft Punk and Armand Van Helden. Musically, ʻHigher State Impressionsʼ touches on techno, house and progressive house across its ten-track format (augmented by a mixed version for those who like it flowing). Thereʼs also a underlying Baleric vibe which draws the whole listen
together superbly.
Kicking off with ʻIntroʼ, a cleverly built and playful start which takes itʼs cue from a live recording of a club littered with synth heavy tracks, Mill follows the brash opening with the gloriously smooth, ʻ45s Under The Sunʼ. From thereon on in
melodies ebb and flow atop a range of carefully programmed beats, whether 4:4 or broken.
Classic deep house sounds, like those featured in ʻAre You Bored Yetʼ and ʻI Canʼt Live my Life aloneʼ, are updated in fine style while the techno elements, a la ʻGemma Callsʼ and the stunning broken beat closer ʻ7th Floorʼ tip respectful nods to the soulful aspects of Detroitʼs electronic history.
In ʻHigher State Impressionsʼ Steve Mill has created an LP that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve but retains its own identity and feel throughout. Itʼs a fluid, engaging and beautiful album which is a joy to listen.
