IMPORTANT - the tool has changed slightly since this screencast and I need to do a new (proper one). That said, you still might it useful to run through the video to get the general idea before trying it out.

This is a temporary screencast to introduce a *very simple* tool to help with YouTube captioning.

http://accessify.com/tools-and-wizards/accessibility-tools/easy-youtube-capti...

It is not meant to replace existing tools out there (like the excellent Magpie), just trying to make it as easy as possible to generate the necessary caption time code. I'm looking for feedback, but also asking for any help in getting the YouTube video to communicate its status (still buffering? Started playback?) to the JavaScript in the page that is taking care of the caption capturing functions.

  • Regarding saving the file as a .sub or .srt, it really depends on what text editor you choose to use. I used TextMate (Mac), but every text editor is different. If you are using Notepad, you may need to choose 'All Files' in the save as dialogue.

  • Ha ha, yes, I know what you mean :-) To be honest, this video is not a permanent one (which I noted in the details section) . I will actually be removing it and putting up another one in its place which I *will* caption. That's a promise. This video is very much off-the-cuff and the narrative is not thought out. Hope that carlifies

  • Can you make the closed caption for all youtube videos this way? Even if those are not uploaded by yourself

  • Great video and very easy to follow. Although I would suggest normalizing the audio for your voice so it's not so quiet.

Try freeware like Audacity and use the Normalize effect.

  • This is realy easy indeed!

  • Thank God you made this.

Got my frustration out of the way.

  • it still works

  • I used notepad & saved the .txt as .sub. Works ok, no prob.

  • seems pretty easy and well explained. But how on Earth do I save my document as a .SUB file? What program do I need to do that?

  • It's really poor... Why does someone need it then they can add captions o.o...
