This video is a supplement to an online class. It steps in after all of the egg shaped body parts have been put together and a layer of flesh colored wool has been added. We made a great little face on the head shape in an earlier lesson and now my character's head and body are just coming together for the first time here in this video.

Sculptural Needle Felting is the art of sculpting with wool using single barbed felting needles to tangle the wool fibers together, creating felt. No sewing, no stuffing, no seams, just solid felted wool. It's pretty cool stuff and is fun and easy to learn.

  • how much felt do you need for this guy

  • @LunatikTokyo the same thickness as the needles you use in your video). Would any of those be ok to use in place of the felting needles? And I looked at AC Moore online(because I have an AC Moore in my town and a Michael's too) has felt & wool roving, but not any batting. Would just roving be fine to use? Thanks!!

  • @LunatikTokyo ...continued

i want by moving it the arm, leg, head, etc ever slow slightly and taking a picture each time. And the limbs will stay where I want them to. So thats why I asked about if you move the limbs slightly, if they were stay where you want them too. I saw that you use special needles to make your projects. I was just wondering.....I have varied sized sewing needles(as well as the needles for my sewing machine), different gauges of wire(and one of which looked to be the...

  • @LunatikTokyo What I mean is that when you make puppets in stop motion you begin with a metal armature(made of heat treated bendable aluminum wire)as the skeletal under structure. Then I will build up the body with various materials like cotton, paper, plastic bags, and then covering it with athletic tape as the "skin" of my puppet. Then you can cover it whatever materials like liquid latex to make skin or you can use fabric.Anyway w/metal armatures I can get the precise movement I want....

  • Ive NEVER heard of needle felting! This looks AWESOME and alot of fun! I have a question. Im an animation student and Ive practiced animating in the stop motion medium(think Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Bob the Builder as examples of stop motion). Are these very poseable dolls? For example if one of the arms were out stretched and I were to fully bend it inward and let go, would it stay locked in that position?Or is there some lightness to it that it wont stay as precisely as i want it too?
