In this video, we show how NI FlexRIO can be used to create non-destructive test (NDT) and ultrasound imaging systems for phased array and other high channel count applications. NI FlexRIO combines modular I/O with a user programmable FPGA and allows the user to create customizable and scalable systems. In the demo, we have a 32 channel pulser module and 32 receive channels, as well. Specifically, we are using the NI 5752 32-channel digitizer adapter module, which is capable of sampling on all channels at 50 MS/s with 12-bit resolution. The module uses the TI AFE5801 and is optimized for nondestructive test (NDT) and ultrasound applications with built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC) features such as selectable antialias filters and programmable time-variable gain control.

Once data is acquired, you can implement your own high-speed control and inline processing algorithms in the FPGA, including fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), filtering, peak detection, and gating. In addition, you can synchronize multiple modules for higher-channel-count systems. In the demo, we show the raw acquired data, 2D B-scan image after the beamforming processing is implemented, and even real-time 3D imaging.

  • This real-time imaging uses the "Full Matrix Capture / Total Focusing Method" technique which is explained in more detail in the 3 part presentation at ASNT's 2010 Fall Conference in Houston (see DiagnosticSonar channel).
