High Royds Former Pauper Lunatic Asylum

High Royds is probably the finest example of the "Broad Arrow Echelon Corridor System In The Country"

Designed by the surveyor to the county Vickers Edwards, his remit to create the ultimate accomodation for 1340 "Pauper Insane"

The administration building represents an ultimate attention to detail with many fine features, for example an Italian laid mosaic and Burmantoft Tiles complimented by exclusive intricate stained glass.

High Royds opened in October 1888 and recieved 30 female patients from Wadlsley Sheffield, so began 120 years of history.

I trained there for a very short time in the early 1990s and that area of with the mosaic floor had the most draining and 'haunted' sort of atmosphere of anywhere I have ever been in my life. The building was beautiful in some respects and the destruction is very sad but what awful memories it must have held to create such a sensation of sadness even when entering it on the brightest sunny days as I did....
